Earlier this offseason, New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson made headlines when he vowed to “make life a living hell” for whomever the team brought in to start at quarterback in 2023.
That claim has not aged very well.
After the Jets officially acquired four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers in a trade with the Green Bay Packers, fans on social media joked at Wilson’s expense about the idea that he could push Rodgers for the starting spot. Of course, after the Jets gave up a significant haul of draft picks for the future Hall of Famer, it’s virtually assured that Rodgers will start behind center as long as he’s healthy.
Rodgers himself got in on the joke Wednesday.
After his introductory press conference, Rodgers fielded questions from reporters in a scrum. One was about Wilson. In response, Rodgers referenced Wilson’s comment but then indicated that he plans to help mentor Wilson.
“He’s going to make my life hell in practice,” Rodgers said, via ESPN’s Rich Cimini, “and I’m going to make his life heaven off the field.”

Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has struggled during his first two professional seasons. Even though the Jets twice benched Wilson last season and made it clear that they were pursuing other starters for next year, the coaching staff and front office has remained complimentary of Wilson, saying their hope is for him to develop behind Rodgers and ultimately resume the starting job.
While the primary focus for both Rodgers and the Jets will be to win the franchise’s second Super Bowl before Rodgers retires, the fact that he expressed an interest in helping groom Wilson is a nice bonus.
