It took an impromptu interview of Green Bay Packers owner Mark Murphy at a girls’ high school state basketball game, but the NFL world learned Friday that the Aaron Rodgers saga is finally nearing a resolution.

Now, a New York Jets reporter has revealed the final step that needs to happen in order to get a resolution about Rodgers’ future: a decision from Rodgers himself.

Connor Hughes of SNY tweeted Saturday morning that “everything that needs to be done is essentially done” for the Packers to trade Aaron Rodgers to the Jets. However, Rodgers still has to decide if he wants to play for the Jets.

“From my understanding on #Jets & Aaron Rodgers: Everything that needs to be done is essentially done in regards to a trade,” Hughes tweeted. “Sides have worked out what needs to be worked out. So if Rodgers wants to be a Jet, he will be a Jet. Broken record, but … just waiting on him to decide.”

Without saying so explicitly, Murphy made it clear Friday that if Rodgers doesn’t want to play for the Jets, his other option is retirement. Murphy’s words echoed the recently reported sentiment that the Packers want to turn their offense over to former first-round draft pick Jordan Love.

Rodgers has been toying with retirement since the Packers’ season ended about two months ago. The Jets flew a contingent to California earlier this week to make their sales pitch to him.

Should the Jets finalize a deal for Rodgers, they are not expected to have to give up a first-round draft pick, according to recent reports. The real question will be how much of Rodgers’ nearly $60 million in pay each team takes on.

Murphy said we should know by Wednesday, the start of free agency, what Rodgers is going to do. It sounds like that will either be retire or play for Gang Green.
