Brett Favre reacts to Jets trading for Aaron Rodgers

Hall of Famer Brett Favre believes quarterback Aaron Rodgers will thrive after joining the New York Jets via a trade from the Green Bay Packers.

“Aaron will do great!!!!” Favre texted ESPN’s Ed Werder, per Rich Cimini of the Worldwide Leader. “He will handle the transition as well as anyone. [He’s a] very smart and instinctive person, on and off the field. In other words, you’re not going to catch him by surprise very often.”

Favre famously featured for the Packers from 1992 through the 2007 season until he was traded to the Jets at the age of 38, in part so that Green Bay could move on to Rodgers as its new starter. Rodgers, meanwhile, turned 39 this past December and had been with the Packers since the opening round of the 2005 draft through the trade to the Jets becoming official at some point on Wednesday.

The Packers have already replaced Rodgers atop their depth chart with 2020 first-round draft pick Jordan Love.

Favre earned three regular-season NFL Most Valuable Player Awards during his Green Bay tenure and guided the club to a Super Bowl title. Rodgers heads to the Jets a four-time NFL MVP, a one-time Super Bowl champion and a future Hall of Famer.

“And I think [he’s] the best at making everyone around him better,” Favre added about his former backup. “I would rather not bet at all than bet against him.”

It turns out Favre and Rodgers could have even more in common by the summer of 2024. Favre spent just one season with the Jets and ultimately ended his career as a member of the Minnesota Vikings, while multiple reports had claimed one reason the latest Jets-Packers saga dragged on through the final week of April is that Gang Green wanted draft-pick protection in the event that Rodgers retires next winter.
