Ezekiel Elliott’s time as a Dallas Cowboy came to a close earlier this week.

The seven-year NFL veteran was released on Wednesday, and now, a fellow 2016 draft selection and longtime teammate of Elliott’s has shared his reaction to the news.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott delivered an emotional message when speaking on Elliott’s time in Dallas.

“Yeah it’s tough… it really is. It’s tough. A brother, playing the game with a brother… we shared so many memories, and grew up as men,” Prescott shared.

“I really can’t imagine taking the field without him.”

Prescott and Elliott were both selected by the Cowboys in the 2016 NFL Draft. Elliott, a former Ohio State Buckeye, was taken No. 4 overall while Prescott, a Mississippi State product, went in the fourth round.

The pair burst onto the scene during their rookie campaigns in 2016. After an early-season injury to usual Dallas starting quarterback Tony Romo, Prescott was thrust into the role and never looked back. He won AP Offensive Rookie of the Year and was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2016.

Elliott, too, had a wildly successful rookie year. He led the league in rushing yards (1,631) and was runner up to Prescott in the Offensive Rookie of the Year race. He was also named to the Pro Bowl in his first professional season.

In being released on Wednesday, Elliott is now a free agent who’s able to sign with any team of his choosing. It will be interesting to see where he lands in 2023.
