Mike White is off to play for his hometown team.
White and the Miami Dolphins agreed to a two-year contract worth up to $16 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The Pembroke Pines, Fla. native floated in and out of the New York Jets’ starting quarterback rotation the past two years as a byproduct of Zach Wilson’s stunted development.
White stepped into the starting job in Week 12 last season, completing 78.6 percent of passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Jets to a 31-10 victory over the Chicago Bears and the franchise’s seventh win of the season (7-4). It was a short-lived resurgence in New York, as White lost his next two starts before fracturing his ribs in a Week 14 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
His return to the Bills game while injured and you’d-have-to-peel-me-off-that-field attitude earned high praise from his teammates. White returned for one last start in Week 17 — in hopes to keep the Jets’ postseason chances alive — before being ruled out of the season finale after New York was eliminated from playoff contention.

White put his arm on the map during the 2022 season, which was his first playing opportunity in the league. In Week 8, White led the Jets to an upset of the Cincinnati Bengals on his 82.2 percent throwing for 405 yards and three touchdowns. White initially entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2018 but never played a game for them before joining the Jets.
White’s overall stats for the Jets (2-5 record as a starter with eight touchdowns against 12 interceptions) aren’t all impressive, but he’s made big plays and has a decent enough arm to be a backup quarterback, and a better one than Skylar Thompson, who finished the 2022 season as the Dolphins’ starter after Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater were out with injuries.
