The NFL world got some shocking news on Thursday.
Defensive back Nasir Adderley, who spent his first four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, abruptly announced his decision to retire. Adderley is 25.
In a lengthy Instagram post, Adderley said that he made the decision due to his health and because he wants to spend more time with family and pursue business ownership.

“After a period of self reflection, I have decided it’s time for me to walk away from the game of football,” Adderley wrote. “Over the past couple of years I have denied this realization, but I’m finally going to put myself first for once. My health is above anything and everyone around me knows that. Truly over-standing my purpose has given me the confidence knowing I don’t belong an employee anymore. My purpose involves spending more time with my loved ones, business ownership and chasing my passion of true liberation.”
Adderley went on to write that he believes he has yet to “scratch the surface” of what he can be as a player, but he doesn’t want to sacrifice his peace of mind.
Adderley, a second-round draft pick out of Delaware, became a free agent this week. He started 44 games across the past three seasons, primarily at free safety. During that time, he has totaled 230 tackles, 12 pass break-ups and three interceptions.
Here’s hoping Adderley finds the contentment he’s looking for in retirement.
