Jameson Williams, a Lions first-round pick in 2022, was suspended six games by the NFL this Friday for gambling during last season.
Williams and fellow Lions wideout Stanley Berryhill reportedly bet on non-NFL games, which is allowed by the league, however, the wagers were placed at the Lions facility. Under the NFL’s current gambling policy, players are not permitted to place bets from team facilities.
In the chaos that’s been the football world today in wake of the NFL’s gambling suspensions, a video of Lions general manager Brad Holmes speaking about Williams last month has started to go viral. In it, he references the wideout needing to do “his part” and made note of accountability.

Williams is now set to miss a significant chunk of the 2023 season after appearing in just six games last season due to injury. While his potential flashed on the field in limited snaps this past fall, the Lions must feel somewhat disappointed about what the No. 12 pick in last year’s draft has been able to produce thus far.
Detroit is now likely to be looking to add a receiver or two in next week’s draft. On top of losing Williams for the first six games this season, the Lions also released wideout Quintez Cephus – a fifth-round pick in 2020 – today in response to him being suspended indefinitely by the league for gambling on NFL games during the 2022 season.
