A resolution to the Aaron Rodgers saga might, finally, be drawing near.
Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy provided an update on Rodgers’ future from a surprising place on Friday: the telecast of the Wisconsin girls’ state basketball tournament.
According to Chris Roth of WBAY, Murphy said that the Packers expect an answer about whether or not Rodgers will retire or return for a 19th NFL season by Wednesday, the start of free agency in the league. He also said that the Packers will honor a trade request from Rodgers if the quarterback asks to be moved to the New York Jets.

“#Packers President Mark Murphy on telecast of Girls State Basketball Tournament confirms team will honor trade request from (Aaron Rodgers) if he wants it, confirms they gave permission to #Jets, and that everyone expects resolution by the start of free agency,” Roth tweeted.
Since the Packers’ season ended short of the playoffs, Rodgers has toyed with the idea of retirement.
During that time speculation has also swirled that the Packers would be open to trading Rodgers. Recent reports have even suggested that the franchise would rather turn its offense over to former first-round draft pick Jordan Love.
The Jets, meanwhile, have emerged as the most trendy landing spot for Rodgers. The Packers gave the Jets permission to speak to Rodgers earlier this week, as confirmed by Murphy, and New York flew a contingent to meet with Rodgers in his California home on Tuesday.
Murphy’s comments would seem to lend credence to a report from ESPN’s Dianna Russini on Thursday that the Jets believe they are on the brink of completing a trade for Rodgers. At this point, the biggest question seems to be not whether or not the Packers are willing to send Rodgers to the Jets, but whether Rodgers would rather retire or continue his career with Gang Green.
Whatever the answer, it will be nice to finally put an end to the speculation any day now.
