An end to the Aaron Rodgers saga appears to finally be in sight.

Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy made an impromptu appearance on the live stream for the Wisconsin girls’ high school state basketball tournament and provided some much anticipated clarity about Rodgers’ future. Murphy said the Packers would grant a trade request if Rodgers makes one and he expects a definitive decision from the four-time MVP about retirement by the start of free agency on Wednesday.

Perhaps even more telling was something Murphy didn’t explicitly say.

According to Dave Schroeder of WBAY, Murphy was asked if there is a scenario in which Rodgers could be back behind center for the Packers in 2023.

Murphy said yes — but he also suggested that wouldn’t be the team’s first choice.

“Yeah, I mean, unless, if things don’t work out the way we want them, yeah, we would,” Murphy said, per Schroeder. “He is obviously a great player.”

Given Murphy’s wording, “if things don’t work out the way we want them,” it seems the recent reports that the Packers would rather turn their offense over to 2020 first-round draft pick Jordan Love are accurate.

Rodgers won the NFL MVP award in 2020 and 2021 and led the Packers to 13 wins in each of his first three seasons under head coach Matt LaFleur. However, his numbers dipped last season, when he threw 26 touchdowns versus 12 interceptions.

It sounds like Rodgers’ options are either to retire or play for a new team next fall. The Jets have emerged as the favorite to land him, having sent a delegation to meet with Rodgers in California earlier this week.

We should know in a matter of days what Rodgers’ future holds.
