Georgia’s Darnell Washington was supposed to come off the NFL Draft board before the third round came calling, yet here we are.
Washington’s NFL Draft slide has been an unexpected one. To put it simply, he’s a freak (in a good way). The 6-foot-7, 270-pound tight end has all the tools to be a successful NFL player.
However, a reason has reportedly emerged that sheds some light on Washington’s slide: medical concerns.
SI’s Albert Breer has more on the developing situation:
“Five tight ends now gone, Georgia’s monster Darnell Washington is still on the board. As we said earlier, some teams have concerns over his medical,” Breer tweeted.

More specifically, NFL insider Aaron Wilson highlights a knee injury that NFL teams are reportedly weary of regarding Washington’s football future.
“Georgia standout tight end Darnell Washington, who excelled in games last season, has been pushed down on some #NFL teams’ draft boards due to a knee issue, per league sources. Unclear how far he falls from original grades, which were high,” Wilson tweeted.

It’s highly unlikely Washington stays on the board heading into round four. However, if he does it might be a clear indication his knee injury is worse than the public realizes.
