A massive domino fell in the NFL Draft on Friday when the Carolina Panthers traded up for the No. 1 overall pick, swapping spots with the Chicago Bears.
The trade between the two teams — only the 13th time in NFL history the first pick has been dealt — will send a massive haul of picks, as well as wide receiver D.J. Moore, to Chicago.
It also might be just the beginning of the movement.
After news of the trade broke Friday, it didn’t take long for some around the NFL to speculate that another deal could be on the way, sending another team into the top three.
With the Panthers certain to select a quarterback after moving to the top spot and the Houston Texans, who hold the No. 2 selection, viewed as very likely to follow suit, quarterback-needy teams could get itchy and trade into the No. 3 slot, currently controlled by the Arizona Cardinals. NFL insider Ari Meirov detailed the potential scenario.
The QB-needy #Colts are now sitting at No. 4 with QBs likely to go No. 1 (Panthers) and No. 2 (Texans).
The #Cardinals at No. 3 could trade out to another team searching for a QB or take the top non-QB on their board.
Draft season in full swing.

“The QB-needy #Colts are now sitting at No. 4 with QBs likely to go No. 1 (Panthers) and No. 2 (Texans),” Meirov tweeted. “The #Cardinals at No. 3 could trade out to another team searching for a QB or take the top non-QB on their board. Draft season in full swing.”
Friday’s trade figures to bolster the likelihood of Ian Rapoport’s recent report that the Cardinals, who have a quarterback in place in Kyler Murray, are “very likely” to trade down.
A few teams could be interested in the Cardinals’ selection. The most likely trade partner figures to be the Indianapolis Colts, who as Meirov noted are in need of a new signal-caller. Should the Colts trade up one spot from No. 4, it would ensure that they at least get one of the top three quarterbacks on the board, while the Cardinals would get a little extra draft capital and still get their pick of all non-quarterback prospects.
Another possibility is that a different team that covets a quarterback, such as the Las Vegas Raiders, could try to jump in front of the Colts. The Raiders currently control the seventh pick.
While the Panthers are officially on the clock, it might be the Cardinals who now have the most intrigue between now and April 27. Stay tuned.
