Jameis Winston appears to be headed back to New Orleans in 2023.
The former No. 1 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft has reportedly agreed to return to the Saints on a one-year deal worth up to $8 million, NFL insider Ian Rapoport announced Monday night. The contract can become official on Wednesday, the start of the new league year.
With Derek Carr expected to take over as the Saints starting quarterback next season, Winston will likely serve as the team’s lead backup.
It's a 1-year deal for Jameis Winston worth up to $8M, source said. With no starting opportunities, Winston sticks with what's familiar. https://t.co/0fWhN2QPJb

Winston’s future with the Saints was uncertain after an injury-riddled 2022 campaign. He started only three games last season and has appeared in just 14 since joining the New Orleans franchise in 2020.
However, with little starting opportunities available elsewhere around the league, Winston appears to be content as a backup in 2023. Should the re-signing come to fruition on Wednesday, Winston could be a trade deadline target next season for teams needing an emergency starting quarterback.
