The Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears last week agreed to a deal that sent the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to Carolina.
While the trade won’t become official until Wednesday, it’s the sort of deal that shook up the landscape of the coming NFL draft.
But according to one report this Monday night, it wasn’t always set in stone that Carolina would acquire the top pick.
According to theScore’s Jordan Schultz, both the Houston Texans and Las Vegas Raiders were suitors for the Bears’ pick.
Sources: Both #Texans and #Raiders made serious inquiries about trading up with the #Bears for the No. 1 pick, but the #Panthers made the most impressive offer.

Texans fans may grimace at Schultz’s report. As they’re firmly aware, the team needed to lose its regular season finale against the Indianapolis Colts to lock up the first overall pick in the NFL draft.
But as it happened, then-coach Lovie Smith led the Texans to a 32-31 win over Indianapolis, resulting in Chicago taking possession of the top pick.
If the Raiders don’t trade further up in the draft, GM Dave Ziegler will be picking seventh overall.
